The hydraulic cylinder is mostly round giving a regular vice even if its a self centring vice a maximum of 3 point contact , which might not be sufficient in case of using the clamping to remove the end glands or covers using a hydraulic torque wrenches or Hydraulic Nut Crackers. the chain vine on the other hand provides you ample amount of clamping due to multiple point contact caused by the chain wrapping around the cylinder, more the clamping points less chances of slippage and cylindiricity issues caused by excessive clamping loads.
