Advantages of Horizontal Honing Machine for Honing...

Advantages of Horizontal Honing Machine for Honing Blind Bores Honing is a crucial process that helps to achieve the desired surface finish, size, and shape for various machine components. Honing is particularly challenging when it comes to blind bores, where the honing oil cannot flow on both sides, and the honing swarf generated during the process has to flow out from the side the tool is stroking. In such situations, Horizontal Honing Machines offer several advantages over vertical honing machines. One of the main advantages of using a horizontal honing machine for honing blind bores is that it helps in faster removal of dust with every backward stroking of the Honing Head. The horizontal setup ensures that the dust does not accumulate at the bottom, as is the case with vertical honing machines. This results in improved efficiency and productivity during the honing process. However, this does not mean that Horizontal Honing Machines are the best approach for all honing jobs. For smaller jobs with open bores and stroke lengths below 2000mm, vertical honing machines are better suited as the clamping time is much lesser than in horizontal honing machines. Nonetheless, special fixturing can help reduce the clamping and setup time taken in Horizontal Honing Machines, making them more efficient for specific types of jobs. Furthermore, Horizontal Honing Machines are suitable for larger and heavier components as they can accommodate larger workpieces. The horizontal orientation of the workpiece also ensures that the Honing process does not cause any distortion in the workpiece, which can be an issue with Vertical Honing Machines. In conclusion, when it comes to Honing Blind Bores, Horizontal Honing Machines offer several advantages over Vertical Honing Machines. These machines ensure faster removal of dust, improved efficiency, and productivity during the Honing process. However, for smaller jobs with open bores and stroke lengths below 2000mm, vertical honing machines are more suitable. With the help of Special Fixturing, the clamping and setup time taken in Horizontal Honing Machines can be reduced, more about that in another post.
